How to Feel Better

24/10/2019

How to feel better in 6 steps graphic

It's common knowledge that taking time to care for your outer spaces can help you feel more clear, calm, comfortable, and in control.

But, if you really want to feel better WITHIN yourself, you also need to tend to your INNER space.

Here's why...

Just like the outer spaces in your life, your inner world's ALSO prone to fill with clutter and mess.

Only this time it's:

MENTAL CLUTTER  ...from constant thinking, self-talk, worrying, analysing, planning, problem-solving, judging, criticising, and more.

EMOTIONAL MESS ...from unmet needs, painful memories, limiting beliefs, daily stressors etc which can make you feel mad, sad, bad, anxious, frustrated and more.

Typically, you're taught to keep all this stuff hidden away inside of yourself, so you can look good and in control on the outside.

Trouble is, keeping a lid on all this stuff takes up vital inner space and energy, which can leave you feeling tired,
overwhelmed, and like you're fit to burst.

So, here's 6 steps to help you care for your inner world.

❶   Let Go of Emotional Baggage
Carrying around lots of old pent-up emotions can make you feel stuck, dull, heavy, tired, and stagnant.

If you want to feel better in the long term, you need to find safe, healthy ways to express and release these old emotions.

You can do this by yourself through things like journaling, art-making, dancing, or in trusted conversation.

It's best to approach this process gently ...just make space for yourself and see what wants to be expressed without prodding or forcing yourself into anything.

Or you can seek guidance and support from a coach, counsellor, or therapist to help you work through it.

Each bit of pent-up emotion you release creates a little more clarity, peace, freedom and vitality within.

❷  Tell Better Stories

What stories do you tell about yourself and your life?

Are they fair? Affirming? Critical? Limiting?

It's important to get clear on the stories you tell, because they impact on your how you see yourself and your life, and on your choices and behaviour.

Try to share stories that better reflect, and affirm, who you REALLY are ...not just ones that reflect your labels, limiting beliefs, mistakes, struggles, and past

Here's how you can start...

Write down 3 stories you repeat about yourself and your life, either to yourself or others.

Maybe you always tell the story of how uncreative you are - or how you have to do everything for everybody - or how you never get anywhere in life.

Ask yourself...

- is this true? (be HONEST - don't let your inner critic answer this question for you)
- does this story help or hurt? (say it aloud and see if it makes you feel good or bad about yourself)
- what's a better story I could tell? (one that's more balanced, authentic, and affirming)

The more accurate and affirming stories you tell about yourself and your life, the better you'll feel.

❸  Move Your Energy

Ultimately, you're an energetic being ...there are physical, mental, emotional, creative, sexual, and spiritual energies within you.

These dynamic energies need to be channelled and expressed - otherwise they can become blocked, stagnant, and imbalanced.

Trouble is, so much of modern day life can keep you stuck in the mental energies of your head.

So, you need to make time to channel your other energies if you want to feel more clear, calm, balanced, vital and whole.

Ask yourself...

- do you use and express the
different energies within you?
- if not,
which do you use most and which get neglected?
- how could you better channel those neglected energies in your everyday life?

For example...
You might channel your creative energy into your outfit choices or meal preparation, or your physical energy into tidying-up or going for a walk.

Keeping these energies moving within you WILL help you to feel better in and about yourself.

❹  Reduce Mental Loops

When you're stuck in a mental loop (where you replay the same sentence, past event, or future scenario over and over again in your head) you:

- use up a lot of energy (which could be better channeled elsewhere).
- can end-up feeling sad, mad, bad, stressed, or overwhelmed.

None of this helps you to feel good in yourself or thrive in your inner and outer life.

Whilst it can be hard to catch yourself at it, when you do, try to break the loop.

Here's how...

1) remind yourself
it's unhelpful
2) if you need to remember something important write it down
3) actively
switch your attention and put your energy into something helpful

❺  Go Into Nature

Getting out into nature is a great way to feel better in yourself.

You're PART of nature and your inner being responds well to fresh air, nature's beauty, and the life-giving elements.

It doesn't have to involve a long hike or amazing scenery. A short walk or simply sitting in your garden can work wonders.

The key is to BE PRESENT in the experience.

So, try and let go of mental chatter  ...relax into your body and use your senses  ...and don't multi-task (you can check your emails or call that friend later).

❻ Tidy your Outer Spaces

When your outer spaces are dirty or messy it can make you feel stressed and chaotic inside.

If you're busy, or find it hard to maintain your outer spaces, it's probably best to approach this one small step at a time.

Tackling a whole room can feel overwhelming - which will make you feel worse not better - so choose one thing that's bothering you and get it sorted, even if it's just a drawer.

If that feels easy, clean and tidy another small area. Repeat over time.

You'll feel better for getting on top of it, and your life will run a little more smoothly because of it.

On the flip side, whenever you feel stressed or agitated you can channel this energy outwards into cleaning, organising, and sorting, rather than letting it fester inside or taking it out on other people.

So, there's 6 steps to help you feel better and, in turn, help you thrive.

Pick one that speaks to you right now and go do something with it!
